2013 Turkey – Our Trip to Turkey

Alan Cousins (age 6) along with his parents, Heather and Jayme Cousins, went to Turkey in August of 2013. He was also accompanied by his grandparents, Brian and Louise McLeod and their good friends Curtis and Carolyn Cowgill.

The ‘girls’, Louise, Carolyn, and Heather attended the 31st Triennial Conference of the International Federation of University Women in Istanbul. This conference is held every 3 years. While the ‘girls’ attended meetings, the ‘boys’, Alan, Brian, Jayme, and Curtis had the luxury of wandering around Istanbul for 5 days, often accompanied by their guide, Mehmet.

After Istanbul, the group left for a private, guided 8-day trip around Turkey starting with 3 days in Cappadoccia, followed by 2 days in the area around Ephesus, and then drove down the coast for 2 days in Bodrum visiting Priene and Didyma along the way.

The Cowgills and the McLeods had previously visited Bodrum in October 2012.

While in Turkey, Alan got to do some pretty exciting things such as getting his picture taken with a Jannisary at the Topkapi Palace Museum, go on a boat ride on the Bosphorus, stay up late in Istanbul and see the city lit up a night, visit the cave dwellings in Cappadoccia and even stay in a ‘cave hotel’, go swimming, eat corn on the cob from a street vendor in Istanbul, eat a lot of Turkish meatballs and fresh fish,  visit a lot of mosques, jump off a gulet (turkish boat) into the Aegian Sea, drinks LOTS of apple tea, go shopping in the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Market, visit ancient churches (not his favorite thing), and sample Turkish Delight. He also learned how to tie the turkish double-knot on a carpet loom, and got his hands dirty creating a clay pot on a pottery wheel. All in all, it was quite an experience for a 6-year-old.

This is Alan’s trip to Turkey.
